    London's new hip wine events

Come for ?weird grapes and a barbecue in the Climpson & Sons arch near London Fields,? said a recent invitation to a weekly Flight Club ? like a wine-tasting tour but in this case with an injection of fun. Wine shop Bottle Apostle chooses a different theme every Thursday; coming soon is Speed Dial Wines, where you can learn about reliable bottles to have on hand.

Meanwhile, on the roof of the Princess Alice pub in Shoreditch, Wine by Simon has begun hosting ?wine silliness? events every Saturday ? a ?sit-down tasting of quirky, awesome, interesting wines with a rocking wine guru?. Also coming soon is Ruth Spivey?s Wine Car Boot tasting on September 1 at a car park in Hackney, and ?extreme? Wednesday wine pop-ups hosted by Grape Night on the roof of Skyroom by London Bridge. ?Want to get that adrenaline pumping? Get a buzz from danger? Then join us for a selection of wines and small plates that like to live life on the edge,? reads its tagline.

Camden-based DropWines, which according to one of its buyers, Sophie McLean, is ?the Innocent Smoothies of the wine world?, has begun hosting special tastings and events in new pop-up spaces.

Tom Harrow, co-founder of WineChap, an online ?repository for tips and suggestions on all things vinous?, says that it is partly on the back of London?s thriving food scene that wine has come into focus: ?The key difference today is context and humour ? taking wine out of traditional, stuffy environments. It?s now about making fine wine accessible ? presenting it in a lighter, cooler, more engaging format.?

He argues that the next generation of wine consumers has access to ?more opinions, greater product choice and are already better informed and more confident in trusting their own taste?.

Tom HarrowWine Chap: Tom Harrow (Photo: WineChap) Harrow believes the key to ?imaginatively reach the new consumer? is through social media and events, and has sold out of tickets to WineChap?s riotous Big Sabrage Breakfast in August. Here guests arrive at 11am and keep drinking until they pass out. The next event, a battle to become the last man tasting held at Le Caf? Anglais, is called Whose Wine Is It Anyway?, while they are also enjoying success with their series of EnoClub events at Polpo and are planning a pop-up Barolo Bar in the autumn.

Oeno-vans are changing the way wine is drunk at public events. Nick Gardner, 26-year-old co-founder of Vin du Vin, is planning his next London pop-up which he hopes ?will educate, entertain and enlighten London wine consumers in the same way some really exciting young chefs and bartenders have done in recent years?. Meanwhile the transient wine bar Street Vin is appearing every Saturday at Street Feast night markets and The Wondering Wine Company, the cooler younger sister of the fine wine supplier Bibendum, will appear this summer at the Real Street Food Festival on the South Bank and at Jamie Oliver?s Big Feastival on August 31.

Obama hosts spy program critics, backers, for FISA talks

How much should the U.S. government be allowed to spy on its citizens? Under what circumstances? With what safeguards? And how much should and can be made public?

Some of the most outspoken congressional critics ? and most vocal backers ? of such government surveillance programs were due at the White House on Thursday to discuss overhauling the way a secret court? approves such activities.

President Barack Obama ?will meet with a group of bipartisan members of Congress to discuss key programs under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act,? his press office announced Wednesday. ?This meeting will be closed press.?

The list of invited lawmakers includes Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Mark Udall of Colorado, who have fought to give the public more information about government espionage programs ? notably those that can target Americans.

The group also includes the top members of the intelligence committees of the Senate and House of Representatives ? Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., as well as Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., and Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md. The No. 2 Senate Democrat, Dick Durbin, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., a key author of the Patriot Act, will also attend.

?Today, at the president?s request, he will meet with a group of bipartisan members to discuss key programs under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act,? a White House official said. ?The president believes it is important to hear from the Congress directly, including from some of the programs? most prominent critics.?

The meeting comes amid an unprecedented congressional rebellion against government espionage, notably the bulk collection of Americans? telephone records and monitoring their activities online.

?It's clear that the sentiment is growing for oversight,? Durbin told ABC News on Sunday. ?The notion that we're going to collect all of the phone records of everyone in an area code on the off chance someone in that area code may be a suspect at a later time goes way too far.?

Durbin also pushed for overhauling the FISA court process for spying on American citizens. Currently, its proceedings are secret, and only the government is represented before the judge, resulting in a de facto rubber stamp for surveillance requests.

?Let's have an advocate for someone standing up for civil liberties to speak up about the privacy of Americans when they make each of these decisions,? Durbin told ABC. ?And let's release some of the transcripts, redacted, carefully redacted, so that people understand the debate that's going on in these FISA courts.?

Obama has said he welcomes the debate ? but the discussion was forced on the White House by the revelations of former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

Still, his administration has been working with lawmakers to overhaul the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) law that undergirds the entire war on terrorism.

Critics say the law, passed shortly after the 9/11 terror attacks, is outdated and overbroad.

Civil liberties champions are watching closely for fear Congress and the White House could actually expand, rather than curtail, sweeping government powers.

SeaWorld: Stranded whale video and 'Blackfish' documentary attract attention

SeaWorld: Stranded whale video goes viral, raising concerns about SeaWorld's whales just as a new documentary questions SeaWorld's treatment of orcas (killer whales).

    By Natalie Rotman,?Associated Press / July 30, 2013

A birthday trip to SeaWorld turned disturbing when a young pilot whale beached itself and then apparently couldn't get back into the water. Video footage of the "stranded" whale has gone viral, though SeaWorld officials say the whale's behavior was normal.

On the heels of the stranded whale video comes "Blackfish," a documentary that may do for killer whales at marine parks what the Oscar-winning 2009 documentary "The Cove" did for dolphin slaughter in Japan.

Like the viral video, "Blackfish" began with a family trip to SeaWorld. The documentary explores what may have caused Tilikum, a 12,000-pound orca, to kill three people, including veteran?SeaWorld?trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010.

News of Ms. Brancheau's death during a show at?SeaWorld?in Orlando inspired director Gabriela Cowperthwaite to explore what happened.?SeaWorld?first claimed that the trainer had slipped and fallen; later, it said Tilikum had been spooked by Brancheau's ponytail.

"Tilikum did not attack Dawn,"?SeaWorld?said in a written response to the film. "All evidence indicates that Tilikum became interested in the novelty of Dawn's ponytail in his environment and, as a result, he grabbed it and pulled her into the water."

The director, who has made documentaries for ESPN, National Geographic, Animal Planet, and the Discovery and History channels, said it took two years to make the film. She procured footage from local and national newscasts, people's personal archives, and through the Freedom of Information Act.

"It was just perseverance when it came to getting footage," she said in an interview. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Once you see that, you can't unsee it. In my mind. that gave me my directive. Now that I know the truth, I have to tell the truth. I didn't imagine that I was going to be making this film. I thought I was gonna be making a completely different film about relationships with our animal counterparts. So it was really learning through interviews and stuff and seeing footage."

Key footage became public after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration took?SeaWorld?to court and the images became exhibits in the case, she said.

She recruited animal-behavior experts, marine park patrons who witnessed whale attacks during performances, and former?SeaWorld?trainers willing to go on the record.

"Personally, I started learning stuff about the animals I didn't know, and I was working there," said former SeaWorld?orca trainer Samantha Berg.

Tilikum, born in the wild near Iceland in 1983, was captured and sent to a marine park near Vancouver before he was sold to?SeaWorld?in Orlando. The film shows divers trapping and kidnapping baby whales for shipment to theme parks while their mothers watched and screeched in agony.

In its statement about the film,?SeaWorld?said it hasn't captured killer whales from the wild in more than 35 years and that 80 percent of its animals were born there or in other zoological facilities.

The director says she sought comment from?SeaWorld, which owns parks in Orlando, San Diego, and San Antonio. But the company declined to appear in "Blackfish," opting instead to issue its July 12 statement, which characterized the film as "shamefully dishonest, deliberately misleading, and scientifically inaccurate."

Another former?SeaWorld?orca trainer, Carol Ray, said whale watching is a wonderful way to see these majestic animals up close.

"If you could afford to take a family of four to a?SeaWorld?Park somewhere around the country, then you can also take your family to a place where you can watch the whales from the shore," Ray said. "Those are great opportunities for seeing them where they're supposed to be... When I have friends that come to me and say things like, 'Yeah, I really want my kids to see them up close,' (I say), 'You know, your kids love dinosaurs, right? They do. They are fascinated by them. They have never seen a dinosaur, have they?'"

"Blackfish" opens in Los Angeles and New York on Friday.

Samsung outs dual-mode LTE Galaxy S4 and S4 Mini versions

Samsung has made big claims regarding its readiness to support developing LTE markets, and its most recent announcement of two new Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini variants supporting both FDD and TDD LTE networks confirms that sentiment.

As global LTE coverage expands, many markets are adding support for TDD-LTE networks, particularly in places where FDD-LTE technology is already in place.

The two dual-mode variants of the Samsung flagship and its compact counterpart are able to seamlessly switch between different types of LTE networks while maintaining uninterrupted voice and data communications.

Samsung's head of Mobile and IT JK Shin elaborated that the first commercially available dual-mode LTE handover devices will "will allow customers to fully enjoy the benefits of fast mobile data communications no matter where they are."

Samsung is vested in the LTE market more than simply through handsets. Through developing LTE infrastructure, its network gear division grew by some 30% since 2010, and is one of Samsung's more profitable ventures.

Tokyo Will Retrofit Its Skyscrapers To Prep For the Next Big Quake

Mass dampers?the gigantic weights designed to counteract swaying in skyscrapers?are usually installed during the construction process. But today, a Japanese real estate company announced plans to install six of the devices atop a 39-year-old building in downtown Tokyo. If all goes well, they could pop up on tall buildings all over the world.
