Occupy protesters arrested at Paul, Democratic HQ (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Police arrested more than a dozen Occupy protesters Thursday in Iowa who are targeting Democrats and Republicans just days before the state's closely watched lead-off presidential caucuses.

Five protesters were arrested outside the Iowa campaign headquarters of presidential contender Ron Paul in Ankeny before the group moved on to the Iowa Democratic Party headquarters in Des Moines, where 12 more were taken into custody. All were ticketed for trespassing and released.

The protests are part of an Occupy the Caucuses effort launched this week in Des Moines that has attracted activists from around the country. Many of them have promised to interrupt campaign activities, and organizers promised more confrontations on Friday with campaign offices of Republican presidential hopefuls.

Occupy the Caucuses spokeswoman Danielle Ryun, who was among those arrested at the state Democratic Party headquarters, said the goal is not to be arrested. But since campaign officials won't listen to them, protesters are willing to be arrested to get their message across, she said.

"It would be great if we could show up, issue our concerns and have the candidates acknowledge us and change their platform," she said.

Those arrested in Des Moines included a 14-year-old girl who was released to her father at the scene. On Thursday, seven protesters were arrested outside Republican Mitt Romney's Des Moines headquarters.

Iowa Democratic Party Executive Director Norm Sterzenbach said the protesters were given the opportunity to express their opinions and party officials listened to their concerns, but he said occupying the party offices was unacceptable.

"Not only does it interfere with the important work that our volunteers and staff do to engage Iowans in the political process, by physically blocking our staff from entering or exiting the building sets a very dangerous precedent," Sterzenbach said in a statement.

Protesters at Paul's campaign headquarters were protesting his proposal to dismantle the Environmental Protection Agency if elected.

Ryun said the Paul campaign headquarters were locked when protesters arrived. By locking their doors, campaigns "are signaling to us that they have become disengaged," Ryun said.

A telephone message left for a Paul campaign spokesman was not returned.

At the Iowa Democratic Party's offices, protesters targeted President Barack Obama, demanding that he put a stop to home foreclosures, turn down campaign donations from Wall Street, and end indefinite detentions of detainees at Guantanamo Bay.

"They're all going to get equal play on this," Ryun said. "We are very disillusioned with every candidate."

Eight protesters were arrested at the party's offices on Dec. 19.

Police in Des Moines and Ankeny said the protesters were given the option of leaving and told if they refused they would be arrested. Police said the arrests were peaceful and no force was used.

The Occupy movement began in New York and has spread across the country. Activists generally protest the growing gap between rich and poor and corporate influence over government.

Debt collector's alleged tactics lead to lawsuit

There is an unprecedented lawsuit against Bank of America and a debt collector it hired. A Cape Coral woman wants them to pay up after she says they harassed her about her late husband's debts.

The plaintiff's attorney is already calling this a landmark victory for everyone who gets harassing phone calls from debt collectors.

While the case hasn't gone to trial yet, a Lee County judge ruled Linda Long can seek punitive damages against the bank and the debt collectors, West Asset Management.

Part of the lawsuit's goal to stop the debt collector's tactics.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiff's attorney, Billy Howard of Morgan and Morgan, accuses the debt collectors of using "psychological warfare" on grief-stricken family members in the hopes of collecting the unpaid debts of deceased family members - debts the family members do not personally owe.

Long claims Bank of America's debt collectors harassed her, trying to collect on a $16,000 credit card debt left when her husband suddenly died of colon cancer.

We obtained this audio clip from one of the collection calls.

It begins right after the widow tells the debt collector she only has $2,000 left to her name.

Debt Collector: You don't think the family's in a position to help you out with that, and get this taken off your plate?
Long: I doubt it, but I could try to give you $2,000 just out of his life insurance, but then I won't have much left. But that's fine I can do that, anything to just get this off my head.

The defendants refused to comment on the pending litigation.

A jury will hear the matter at trial next August.

It's important to remember that debt doesn't go away when a person dies. It's their estate that is responsible for those debts.

If there isn't any money in the estate, typically it goes unpaid.

But - with few exceptions - family members are not personally responsible and do not owe the "deceased debt" collectors.

An official with West Asset Management sent us the following statement Wednesday evening:

"West continues to deny any wrongdoing and stands by it's stated court position that West did not violate any laws."

Harrods reportedly nabs Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry as UK exclusive, costs a princely ?1,275

The department store Harrods is no stranger to exposing Londoners to some of the finer -- and more eccentric -- things in life, and so after learning that it'd be bringing RIM's Porsche Design P'9981 BlackBerry to its shelves as a UK exclusive, we couldn't help but smile with curiosity. While we've yet to see anything official come across the wires, it's reported that this sexy slab of unlocked goodness will retail for £1,275 and hit stores before the month's end. We've attempted to confirm these details with RIM's UK group but, as it turns out, Brits like going home early on Friday, too.

VatorNews - UK businesses investing in social media for 2012

?

Medium to large-sized business in the U.K. are ready to spend at least as much money next year as they did this year on their social media strategy, according to a report from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Nearly nine out of 10 corporations spoken to said that they would maintain the budget or spend more on social media in 2012 in the survey of more than 200 finance directors, COOs, CFOs, CEOs and treasurers polled in between Oct. 11-26.

The results came out this week and showed that companies in the U.K. that have revenue above $40 million considered social media a cost-effective communication tool and 39% even stated that it helped improve the company reputation.

?UK businesses clearly understand the importance of social media,? said John Dixon, head of technology, media and telecoms from Royal Bank of Scotland CIB, in a statement. ?It is an effective and cost-effective tool, and its increased popularity comes at a time of increased pressures on marketing. The challenge is for firms to maximize their investments beyond 2012.?

Approximately half of the 13% of companies looking to cut social media spending in 2012 are doing so because of budget restrictions, and 27% are making the cut because they saw no return on investment.

The study also looked at the role of tablets in business -- finding that iPads and similar devices are growing in popularity with senior executives.

Approximately 47% of senior management regularly use an iPad for business or in the office. Just under a quarter of executives use tablets to access business programs -- that number increases to 35% for the company CEOs.

Earlier this year, major advertisers began really?shift significant dollars into Facebook and other social sites to grow brand awareness where all those eyes were: on social networks. Research firm eMarketer estimated that Facebook display advertising revenues would grow 80.9% this year to $2.19 billion, giving Facebook 21.6% of all online display advertising ? up from 13.6% in 2010.

While not all social media money goes toward advertising, the growth of marketing opportunities on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn does become a force that can't be ignored, especially for the medium and large businesses that depend on brand awareness.

Idaho teen loses cancer fight after delivering son (AP)

POCATELLO, Idaho ? Jenni Lake gave birth to a baby boy the month before her 18th birthday, though she was not destined to become just another teenage mother.

That much, she knew.

While being admitted to the hospital, she pulled her nurse down to her at bed level and whispered into her ear. The nurse would later repeat the girl's words to comfort her family, as their worst fears were realized a day after Jenni's baby was born.

"She told the nurse, `I'm done, I did what I was supposed to. My baby is going to get here safe,'" said Diana Phillips, Jenni's mother.

In photographs, the baby's ruddy cheeks and healthy weight offer a stark contrast to the frail girl who gave birth to him. She holds the newborn tightly, kissing the top of his head. Jenni, at 5 feet and 4 inches tall, weighed only 108 pounds at the full term of her pregnancy.

A day after the Nov. 9 birth, Phillips learned that her daughter's decision to forgo treatment for tumors on her brain and spine so she could carry the baby would have fatal repercussions. The cancer had marked too much territory. Nothing could be done, Phillips said.

It was only 12 days past the birth ? half spent in the hospital and the other half at home ? before Jenni was gone.

Even so, her family and friends insist her legacy is not one centered in tragedy, but rather in sacrifice.

This month, her family gathered at their ranch style home in Pocatello, where a Christmas tree in the living room was adorned with ornaments picked out just for Jenni, including one in bright lime green, her favorite color. She had passed away in a bedroom down the hall.

Recalling Jenni's infectious laugh and a rebellious streak, her mother held the baby close, nuzzling his head, and said, "I want him to know everything about her, and what she did."

___

The migraines started last year, when Jenni was a 16-year-old sophomore at Pocatello High School. She was taken to the family doctor, and an MRI scan found a small mass measuring about two centimeters wide on the right side of her brain.

She was sent to a hospital in Salt Lake City, some 150 miles south of Pocatello, and another scan there showed the mass was bigger than previously thought.

Jenni had a biopsy Oct. 15, 2010, and five days later was diagnosed with stage three astrocytoma, a type of brain tumor. With three tumors on her brain and three on her spine, Jenni was told her case was rare because the cancer had spread from her brain to another part of her body with no symptoms.

Her parents, who are divorced, remember they were brought into a room at the hospital and sat down at a long table as doctors discussed her chances of survival.

"Jenni just flat out asked them if she was going to die," said her father, Mike Lake, 43, a truck driver who lives in Rexburg, north of Pocatello.

The answer wasn't good. With treatment, the teen was told she had a 30 percent chance to make it two years, Lake said. While he was heartbroken, Lake marveled at how strong she seemed in that moment. "She didn't break down and cry or anything," he said.

But her mom recalled Jenni did have a weak moment that day.

"When they told her that she might not be able to have kids, she got upset," said Phillips, 39.

Jenni started aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments, while also posting videos on a YouTube site titled "Jenni's Journey," where she hoped to share her story with updates every other day. She managed to upload only three videos, though, as her treatments left her tired and weak.

On her second video, posted Nov. 20, 2010, Jenni appears distraught while a family friend records her having lunch with her mom.

"Last night, like, I was just lying in bed and I was thinking about everything that was going on and it just like, it just hit me, like everything, and I don't know, it made me cry," Jenni says on the video.

Her mom is shown burying her face in her hands. "Do you know how hard it is to be a mom and know that she's sick and there's nothing you can do," she says, before collapsing into tears.

Jenni persists: "It's hard. It's like, I don't know how long this is going to last and I just want it to go away ... I feel like this is holding me back from so much ..."

By March of this year, the tumors had started to shrink, the family said.

In a picture taken at her prom in early May, Jenni is wearing a dark blue strapless dress and gives the camera a small smile. There's a silver headband in her hair, which is less than an inch long. Chemotherapy took her shoulder-length blond tresses.

Her boyfriend, Nathan Wittman, wearing a black dress shirt and pants, is cradling her from behind.

___

Jenni started dating Nathan a couple of weeks before she received her diagnosis. Their adolescent relationship withstood the very adult test posed by cancer, the treatments that left her barely able to walk from her living room to her bedroom, and the gossip at school.

"The rumors started flying around, like Nathan was only with her because she had cancer," said Jenni's older sister, Ashlee Lake, 20, who tried to squelch the mean-spirited chatter even as the young couple ignored it.

They were hopeful, and dreamed of someday opening a restaurant or a gallery.

Jenni had been working as an apprentice in a local tattoo shop. "She was like our little sister," said the owner, Kass Chacon. But in May, Jenni's visits to the shop grew less frequent.

She had been throwing up a lot and had sharp stomach pains. She went to the emergency room early one morning with her boyfriend and when she returned home, her family members woke up to the sound of crying. "We could hear Jenni just bawling in her room," said her sister, Kaisee, 19.

She had learned that she was pregnant, and an ultrasound would show the fetus was 10 weeks old.

Jenni's journey was no longer her own.

From the start of treatment, she was told that she might never have children, her mother said, that the radiation and chemotherapy could essentially make her sterile.

"We were told that she couldn't get pregnant, so we didn't worry about it," said Nathan, 19.

Jenni, the third of her parents' eight children, had always wanted to be a mom. She had already determined to keep the baby when she went to see her oncologist, Dr. David Ririe, in Pocatello two days after she found out she was pregnant.

"He told us that if she's pregnant, she can't continue the treatments," Phillips said. "So she would either have to terminate the pregnancy and continue the treatments, or stop the treatments, knowing that it could continue to grow again."

Dr. Ririe would not discuss Jenni's care, citing privacy laws, but said, generally, in cases in which a cancer patient is pregnant, oncologists will consider both the risks and benefits of continuing with treatment, such as chemotherapy.

"There are times during pregnancy in some situations, breast cancer being the classic example, where the benefits of chemotherapy may outweigh the risk to mother and baby," Ririe said. "There are other times where the risk outweighs the benefits."

There was no discussion about which path Jenni would choose. Her parents didn't think of it as a clear life or death decision, and Jenni may not have, either. They believed that since the tumors had already started to shrink earlier, she had a strong chance of carrying the baby and then returning to treatment after he was born.

"I guess we were just hoping that after she had the baby, she could go back on the chemotherapy and get better," her mother said.

___

Jenni and Nathan named the baby Chad Michael, after their dads. Nathan has legal custody of the child, who is primarily cared for by Nathan's mother, Alexia Wittman, 51.

"Nathan will raise him," she said. She brings the baby to Jenni's house to visit her family whenever they ask.

Jenni didn't show regret for her decision, not in the final weeks of her pregnancy as she grew weaker, and not when she started to lose her vision as the cancer took its course, her family said.

Jenni's last words were about her son as he was placed beside her a final time, her father said. As she felt for the baby, she said: "I can kind of see him."

In payroll tax battle, GOP shows cracks under Democratic pressure

Democrats are ramping up the pressure on House Republicans over their refusal to pass a payroll tax deal ? and some Senate Republicans are not rushing to their colleagues' aid.?

After a year of clashes on Capitol Hill over trillion-dollar deficits, 40 is suddenly the biggest number in congressional politics, as Democrats and House Republicans clash over a payroll-tax cut and other measures set to expire on Jan. 1.

Forty dollars is the average drop that some 160 million Americans will see in their paychecks, if Congress doesn?t act.

A White House call for responses to what a $40 tax hike means to families produced thousands of tweets in just 24 hours. Replies included: ?nearly a tank of gas,? ?feeding my family for three nights,? ?two months of vet care,? ?co-pay for prescription drugs,? and ?default on my mortgage, so I can feed my son.?

With just 10 days before the payroll tax ?holiday? and other measures expire, the cost to American families of gridlock as usual on Capitol Hill is immediate and personal. Democrats and the White House are counting on public outrage to force Speaker John Boehner ? and the tea-party backed conservatives who pushed GOP leaders to take on this fight ? to cave.

?The average Republican House member is going to hear from their constituents, and the pressure to come back and pass our bill is just going to increase,? said Sen. Charles Schumer (D) of New York in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday.

?If it?s really a one-year deal you want, so do we,? he added. ?We will be the first ones on a plane to work out a one-year deal but on one condition: First pass the Senate?s two-month agreement, then we can negotiate right away and maybe have the whole thing done by New Years.?

In a bid to dramatize the impasse, House Democratic whip Steny Hoyer and Rep. Chris van Hollen (D) of Maryland took to the House floor in a bid to pass the Senate bill by unanimous consent. They were gaveled down at the start of a pro forma session that only lasted a few minutes.

?The House Republican leadership never even allowed a vote on the bipartisan Senate bill,? says Mr. Van Hollen, the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee. ?The reason they didn?t allow a vote was that they knew it would pass on a bipartisan vote.?

The payroll tax impasse began on Tuesday, as House Republicans rejected a Senate bill that would have extended the payroll tax and other expiring provisions for two months, on a party-line vote, 229 to 193. The Senate bill, which passed 89 to 10, also extended expiring federal benefits for jobless workers and blocked a 27.4 percent drop in payments to doctors serving Medicare patients, set to take hold on Jan. 1.

Nikki Haley endorses Mitt Romney. Can she help him win South Carolina? (The Ticket)

Romney campaigning with Haley in 2010 (Bruce Smith/AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C.--South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is backing Mitt Romney's bid for the Republican presidential nomination?ending the suspense over one of the most sought-after endorsements in the party.

Announcing her decision on Fox News, Haley, a tea party conservative who was elected as the state's first female governor a year ago, pointed to Romney's private-sector background and his experience as a Republican governor in a Democratic state as the reason behind her support.

"What I want is someone who is not part of the chaos in Washington," Haley told Fox News.

Acknowledging that Romney is "not the perfect candidate," Haley said she believed the former Massachusetts governor could go toe-to-toe with President Obama in the general election.

"Gov. Romney is the one candidate that President Obama consistently tries to hit and get out of the way," Haley told Fox News. "That let's me know he's scared of him. It also lets me know Gov. Romney's got a good fight in him and that's the one President Obama doesn't want to have to go against."

The endorsement isn't surprising. Romney backed Haley in what was one of the nation's nastiest Republican gubernatorial primaries in 2010?breaking with some of his own supporters. And he campaigned heavily for her bid in the state in the general election.

Over the last several months, Haley was wooed by virtually all of the Republican contenders. Michele Bachmann and Newt Gingrich even went so far as to stay the night as Haley's invited guest at the governor's mansion in Columbia. But Haley hinted early on that she wouldn't back Gingrich, telling reporters in March that she believed his political moment had passed.

"He's been there and done that," she said.

Haley's endorsement is sure to offer a boost to Romney's almost non-existent campaign in the Palmetto State and give him credibility nationally among tea party and conservative voters--but there's some debate among South Carolina Republicans over how helpful her backing will really be in the state.

A Winthrop University Poll released earlier this week found Haley's poll numbers in the state have dramatically plummeted since she was elected. According to the poll, she currently has a 35 percent approval rating among all South Carolina voters?lower than President Obama's job rating in the state, which sits at 44 percent.

Her numbers were perhaps most striking among Republicans, who were split over Haley's job performance. Fifty-two percent said they approve of the job Haley is doing, 24 percent said they were "not sure" and 22 percent said they disapprove. But Haley allies have strongly disputed the poll's findings, suggesting Winthrop's sampling was off.

"There is no way that Nikki Haley is less popular than Barack Obama in South Carolina," State GOP chairman Chad Connolly told Yahoo News. "It's beyond comprehension. It just can't be true."

But several top Republicans in the state confirmed that Haley's popularity within the party isn't what it used to be and questioned how much help she could be to Romney, who has invested little time or money in the state even though the race is considered wide open ahead of next month's primary.

"She has a tense relationship with establishment Republicans, and she's not doing well with the grassroots," one top Republican in the state, who declined to be named talking about Haley, told Yahoo News. "I tend to think that getting the endorsement of a governor in a key early state is helpful, but in this case, I don't know if it helps or hurts Romney."

The former Massachusetts governor is set to kick off a two-day visit to South Carolina on Friday afternoon, where Haley will campaign alongside him. Romney has spent just seven days in the state since formally kicking off his second Republican nomination bid in May and has just three paid staffers in the state?a dramatically smaller footprint than he had during his last presidential run four years ago.

Once viewed as the frontrunner in South Carolina, Romney has given up his lead to Gingrich, who now leads the ex-governor 38 percent to 22 percent, according to a Winthrop University poll of likely GOP voters in the state.

The End of Gerrymandering

California?s process avoided the tiebreaker pitfall by requiring bipartisan agreement among its commission members. Impressively, they achieved it, approving new maps unanimously. But that didn?t stop Republicans, and some minority groups, from crying foul. Republicans allege that three Southern California districts were rigged to protect Democratic incumbents; some Latinos have complained that the new maps don?t include enough Latino-majority districts. With no gerrymandering legislators to blame, Republicans resorted to criticizing a nonpartisan consultant from UC-Berkeley who helped draw the maps. (?I had never been called a ?partisan hack? in my life? before consulting on the redistricting project, the consultant, Karin Mac Donald, told me.) Republican activists filed two lawsuits challenging the redistricting plan in the state Supreme Court. After losing both, they recently reloaded with a new federal suit. Meanwhile, another group of Republicans has raised millions in a bid to put the new maps to a referendum.

Ex-Taliban deny reports of Qatar-office (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? An ex-Taliban envoy said on Thursday that he had no knowledge of plans by the Afghan insurgents to set up a political office in Qatar, even though media reports billed him as a potential chief of a possible Taliban mission in the tiny Gulf state.

By opening an office, the Taliban would indicate a willingness to talk peace after 10 years of war in Afghanistan and signal their intention to try and find a political solution to an insurgency that has cost the lives of thousands.

Abdul Salam Zaeef, the Taliban's former ambassador to Pakistan, said he was unaware of such an office being planned. A top member of the Afghanistan peace council, ex-Taliban official Arsala Rahmani, said he was also unaware that such an office was about to open.

Their remarks follow reports in an Indian newspaper, The Hindu, quoting unnamed Indian diplomatic sources, that said work was being finalized on a Taliban office in Qatar that Zaeef may run.

Zaeef told The Associated Press that he had not heard that plans were being finalized for the office in Qatar or that he was being considered to staff it. "I'm not aware of that," Zaeef said.

Afghanistan recalled its ambassador to Qatar on Wednesday, the same day the newspaper published the story, but it is unclear if it is related to the report.

The ministry did not give a reason for recalling Khalid Ahmad Zakaria from the Qatari capital of Doha, but said Kabul values ties with Qatar and that diplomatic communications would continue.

The ministry could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday about whether recalling the ambassador was linked to The Hindu report.

Meanwhile, Rahmani said the peace council, a group of about 70 influential Afghans and former Taliban appointed by President Hamid Karzai to try and reconcile with the insurgents, was busy trying to find a new leader.

"These days we are involved in appointing a new head of the peace council," said Rahmani, who once served as deputy minister of higher education in the Taliban regime.

The former head of the peace council, Burhanuddin Rabbani, was assassinated on Sept. 20. Rabbani, a former president of Afghanistan, was killed by a suicide bomber posing as a peace emissary from the Taliban.

After his death, Karzai said informal peace efforts would not resume until the Taliban established an official address.

Analysis: Amazon's advertising push gains steam (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Amazon.com Inc is known as the world's largest online retailer, but the company is aggressively expanding in online advertising, putting it on course for a clash with Google Inc, the leader in the space.

Amazon Product Ads, which promotes other companies' products on Amazon's website, emerged this holiday as a major online sales channel for some retailers.

Amazon is actively hiring for its Display Ad business. And its Adzinia Media Group advertising unit recently doubled its office space in New York to 60,000 square feet.

Amazon is capitalizing on the more than 100 million monthly visits to its websites by selling ads to other companies that are willing to pay to reach this huge base of potential customers. While the effort risks losing sales to rival retailers, it is also a potentially lucrative business for the company.

"It's higher margin than their traditional business and they've shown a lot of interest in expanding it," said Ben Schachter, an analyst at Macquarie.

Online advertising will grow by more than 20 percent to over $30 billion in the United States this year and may reach $50 billion by 2015, mainly driven by a surge in display ads, according to eMarketer.

Display ad providers generate profit margins of 20 to 25 percent, while Amazon is used to margins of 5 to 6 percent, Schachter noted.

ADS FOR OTHERS

Amazon is running product ads and display ads on its own websites, including Amazon.com, IMDb.com and DPReview.com. But Schachter expects the company to branch out to other websites.

That would put Amazon in direct competition with Google, Yahoo! Inc and Facebook, the top three players in online advertising, according to eMarketer data. ValueClick Inc would also become a rival, Schachter noted.

Amazon has detailed data on customers and could use that to create more relevant and timely display ads on websites, the analyst said.

When someone visits a site, Amazon data may help identify the person as a resident of a particular state who recently bought a specific product, like diapers, from an Amazon website. The display ad that pops up would adjust in real time to promote baby products, Schachter explained.

JOB LISTINGS

Schachter began tracking Amazon's display ads for the first time in the fourth quarter, along with Yahoo, AOL Inc, Google's YouTube, and MSN, owned by Microsoft Corp.

Display ads appeared often on the Amazon.com homepage in the fourth quarter and over a quarter of them were for consumer packaged goods from companies including Philips and Procter & Gamble, the analyst noted.

Amazon is tight-lipped about future plans, but the company has posted over 30 job openings for its display ad business since the end of February.

"We are building next-generation advertising products by leveraging Amazon's world-class personalization technologies, unparalleled customer data and engaging video content," the company said on its website this week.

An Amazon spokeswoman said the company's Product and Display ad businesses are working with "thousands" of advertisers including Procter & Gamble and Microsoft. She declined to share more details.

"TWO TITANS"

The ad push shows how Amazon and Google are increasingly clashing over each part of the online shopping process. Google has traditionally dominated when consumers search online for something to buy, while Amazon focused more on the back end - selling products and processing orders.

Google is in talks with retailers about a delivery service that would compete with Amazon's successful Prime program, which charges an annual fee of $79 for free two-day shipping in the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported last week.

"The two titans are going head to head as their businesses are overlapping more and more," said Jeffrey Grau, e-commerce analyst at eMarketer.

A lot of shoppers start product searches on Amazon.com now, rather than Google's search engine. This online traffic, combined with Amazon's data on customer purchases, can help the company create more targeted ads, Grau explained.

"That's got to be very troubling to Google," Grau added. "Amazon is a threat to Google because it's catching consumers earlier in the purchase process."

PRODUCT ADS TAKE OFF

Amazon has been working on its advertising business for at least three years.

Amazon Product Ads has been around since 2008, but it really caught on this holiday season, according to Eric Best of Mercent, which helps retailers sell more through websites including Amazon.com and eBay Inc.

Mercent clients got about 10 percent of their Amazon sales through Amazon Product Ads during the early part of the holiday season, up from almost nothing in the same period last year.

On Cyber Monday, Mercent clients saw year-over-year sales growth of 35 percent on Amazon's third-party marketplace. Sales growth via Amazon Product Ads was 88 percent, Best said.

Companies including HSN Inc, Wayfair, a big online furniture retailer, Wine.com and US-Mattress sell through this channel.

MBM Company got 44 percent of its sales on Thanksgiving though Cyber Monday from Amazon Product Ads. That was up from 4 percent of total sales in the same period of 2010.

"It's really exploded for us," said Jon Ozaksut, e-commerce marketing manager at the jewelry retailer.

MBM has diverted some of its ad spending away from other channels and into Amazon Product Ads, he said.

Like.com used to be MBM's biggest comparison-shopping channel. Google acquired Like.com in 2010 and "sort of depreciated it and is not using it that as much," Ozaksut said. "We spent most of the year looking for a new leader for comparison-shopping-engine sales and Amazon is in that position now."

NEW CATEGORIES

Amazon Product Ads is also a way for the company to get into categories where it doesn't sell products itself.

Amazon doesn't sell wine, but the company has a new partnership with Wine.com that runs through Amazon Product Ads. When shoppers search for wine on Amazon.com, they are directed to the online wine retailer's website through a product ad in the corner of the search result page.

"It's small now but I suspect it will be much bigger next year," said Wine.com Chief Executive Rich Bergsund. "It's a way for Amazon to participate in wine sales without dealing with all the regulation and complexity of shipping wine across state lines."

Scientists successfully transitioned fundamental research in autonomy to undersea gliders

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Scientists have successfully transitioned fundamental research in autonomy to undersea gliders, demonstrating in recent sea tests how the new software, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), can help robots become smarter at surveying large swaths of ocean.

"Using the new algorithms, the vehicle has a greater ability to make its own decisions without requiring a human in the loop," said Marc Steinberg, program officer for ONR's Adaptive Networks for Threat and Intrusion Detection or Termination (ANTIDOTE), a multi-disciplinary university research program.

With plans to deploy squadrons of air, surface and undersea robotic vehicles later this decade, the Department of the Navy is investing in basic research programs to improve autonomous system capabilities.

"Advancing autonomy for unmanned systems allows you the ability to do things that wouldn't be practical otherwise because we don't have enough warfighters or communication today," said Steinberg, who works in ONR's Naval Air Warfare and Weapons Department. "If you incorporate some intelligence on the vehicles that can solve complex mission problems, then we can enable wholly new capabilities that can be achieved with limited numbers of people and communications in complicated, dynamic environments."

ONR provided funding to researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and University of Southern California (USC) to advance the intelligence of autonomous vehicles under both ANTIDOTE and a related university program called Smart Adaptive Reliable Teams for Persistent Surveillance. They developed a persistent surveillance theory that provides a framework for decision-making software that maximizes a robot's collection of information over a given area. It gives some guarantees on performance in dynamic environments.

"The ability to do surveillance that takes into account the actual conditions of the environment brings a whole new level of automation and capability," said Dr. Daniela Rus, co-director of MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Center for Robotics. "We have come up with a solution that lets the robot do local reasoning to make decisions and adjust the path autonomously without having to come up to the surface to interact with humans."

The scientists produced an algorithm that incorporates both the user's sensing priorities and environmental factors, such as ocean currents, into a computer model to help undersea robots conduct surveys and mapping missions more efficiently.

Tests proved the benefits of using the new algorithm. The scientists conducted two separate experiments using underwater robots called gliders, operated by oceanographers. They used two gliders, one with the algorithm and one without, to measure whether the experimental technology yielded better maps of algae blooms and other underwater phenomena in the Pacific Ocean.

"In areas where the oceanographers wanted more information, the persistent surveillance algorithm actually produces more detail," said Dr. Gaurav S. Sukhatme, ANTIDOTE's principal investigator and director of USC's Robotic Embedded Systems Lab. "The system can automatically figure out how to divide its time between areas that are more interesting and areas that are less interesting."

The algorithm helps the gliders decide when to spend more time looking at regions that have changes in activity or environmental factors. Without the control algorithm, gliders paid equal attention to all areas and acquired less information during the experiments in Monterey Bay, Calif., and along the southern coastal waters near Los Angeles in October and November 2010. The first experiment lasted a period of three weeks; the second ran for two weeks. A third experiment in August 2011 took place in the Southern California Bight for 10 days. Results of the single-glider test are being analyzed.

Though the gliders were an ideal first test of the persistent surveillance theory and algorithm, the software is applicable to many different machines and robots, the scientists said.

With Facebook At Its Core, Color Will Relaunch As Champion Of The Video Status Update

colorshotColor is almost ready for round two. The company ? which famously raised $41 million and launched last spring only to watch its initial product bomb (which in turn spurred plenty of Schadenfreude) ? has spent the last eight months trying to figure out what went wrong, and where it's headed next. And now it's back with a product that has a mission statement as simple as its original vision was complex: it wants to reinvent the status update, in the form of 30 second long, muted video clips. Actually, Color says it isn't really thinking of these updates as video at all, but rather as "visual" status updates that fall somewhere between videos and photos. The last time we heard from Color was?back in September, when it announced that it was going all-in on Facebook's platform (the original version of the product tried to build a new, elastic social graph). The app they previewed in September combined aspects of live video-streaming service Qik with Facebook's Photos product. And over the last few months Color has been running a private beta program at Texas A&M, where they've been monitoring the various use cases students come up with. They've tweaked the product significantly as a result of that testing, and they'll be shipping the new Color to users on both iPhone and Android in the next few weeks.

(AP) ? Green cars rolled into the spotlight at the Tokyo auto show as Japan's automakers look to fuel efficient technology to reinvigorate growth after tough times.

The showcase for Japan's pillar auto industry was holding its preview for media on Wednesday ahead of opening to the public on Saturday.

Plug-in hybrids and electric cars are centerstage at the Tokyo Motor Show ? reflecting both how green cars are growing in popularity and the low profile of foreign automakers at the event.

The show been scaling back in recent years because of the waning importance of Japan as an auto market. Car makers ? including Japan's ? are increasingly looking to China, India and other nations with greater growth potential.

Ford Motor Co. of the U.S. skipped the show, and General Motors Co. had only a tiny corner booth. Just a handful of European makers such as BMW with a chance at wooing rich Japanese buyers had full-scale booths.

Japanese automakers have had a tough few years due to the strong yen, image problems from Toyota's massive recalls and the large production disruptions from the March disasters in northeastern Japan. But green technology remains a strong selling point for car makers such as Toyota Motor Corp. which pioneered broad consumer acceptance of gasoline-electric hybrid cars with its hit Prius.

Honda Motor Co. said it will start selling an electric version of its Fit subcompact in the U.S. and Japan by the middle of next year. It showed concept cars such as the AC-X plug-in hybrid, EV-STER electric roadster convertible and a tiny electric car called Micro Commuter

"We will continue to offer products with an edge," said Honda President Takanobu Ito before drinking orange juice poured by Honda's Asimo robot, which recently has gained more nimble human-like fingers.

Honda showed a portable battery that people could carry around and put not only in their electric cars and plug-ins but also in small electric scooters.

Nissan Motor Co. had an updated version of its futuristic-looking electric car called Pivo 3, which can drive itself, find parking spaces and swerve around in almost a complete circle.

Koichiro Imoto, who writes about Japan's auto industry, says overseas interest in the show has plunged, except for a handful of manufacturers like Volkswagen AG that do good business in Japan.

"Technology is the only thing Japan has to cling to so the show is trying to highlight those strengths," he said. "Selling the technological superiority is the only way left for Japan."

Toyota President Akio Toyoda was outright emotional at his presentation when he said Japan was going through hard times after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

Japanese automakers, including Toyota Motor Corp., were forced to scale back production as parts suppliers in northeastern Japan were damaged.

That battering was followed by a smaller but similar problem when suppliers got hit by flooding in Thailand, Toyoda said.

"Japan has been plunged into sadness," he said, often gesturing with his hands to emphasize his points.

Toyota must do all it can to work with the people of northeastern Japan and Thailand to propel a recovery, he said.

"Our messages are 'Fun to drive again,' and 'Never give up,' " he said, using English phrases for the mottos.

Mamoru Katou, auto analyst with Tokai Tokyo Research, believes the most interesting models at the show are the ones close to being commercial models.

On display at Toyota's sprawling booth is the plug-in version of its hit Prius hybrid, which will start at 2.75 million yen ($35,200) with subsidies in Japan.

Toyota began taking orders in Japan for the plug-in on Tuesday. In the U.S., where Toyota has already started to take orders online, the car starts at $32,000 without subsidies, which will vary by state.

Toyota, which has sold more than 3.4 million hybrids worldwide so far, is targeting Prius plug-in sales of 60,000 a year globally. The car is set for delivery in Japan in January.

Toyota is also showing an electric car and a fuel cell prototype.

"Overall, interest is going to be diminished because the economy isn't doing so well around the world," Katou said. "But there's still interest in Toyota cars."

Carlos Ghosn, chief executive at Nissan ? which has been aggressive on electric vehicles with its Leaf car, but has been a straggler with hybrids compared to Toyota and Honda ? said no single green technology was going to dominate.

In about a decade, electric vehicles will make up 10 percent of the auto market as concerns grow about global warming, and governments in the U.S., Japan, Europe and China encourage their sales, he said.

"Zero-emission cars are going to become more and more popular," Ghosn said on the sidelines of the show. "You need to prepare the technologies."
