Farne puffin numbers show increase

Puffin numbers are on the increase but still way below their 2003 high.

Puffin numbers in a habitat in the north-east of England are making a comeback despite thousands having perished in severe winter storms.

A census on the Farne Islands, off the coast of Northumberland, showed there had been an 8% increase from the last count in 2008.

There are now just under 40,000 pairs of nesting puffins across the eight National Trust-owned islands.

But numbers are still lower than the 55,674 living on the islands in 2003.

Dozens of seabirds were washed up along the coast of north-east England and Scotland in March, with experts blaming weather conditions, as well a shortage of food.

A team of 11 rangers have been checking thousands of burrows on the Farne Islands in search of nesting puffins since May.

David Steel, head ranger on the Farne Islands, said the rise in numbers was a "positive result and a step forward following worrying declines in recent years".

He added: "It comes as a real relief following some difficult years for them - with the flooding of burrows last year and a very challenging winter.

"We had feared that the numbers of puffins would be down again as has happened on other colonies, including those on the Shetland Islands.

"The bad weather during recent seasons has had some impact on numbers, but with a good nesting habitat secured by us and a plentiful supply of food in the area, numbers have been recovering pretty strongly, which is great news for the puffins and other seabirds."

As well as the puffins, the Farne Islands host thousands of grey seals along with many other types of bird, including Arctic terns, guillemots and razorbills.

Mass. police officer releases photos of 'evil' Boston bombing suspect

    Courtesy Boston Magazine

A sniper trains his beam on Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Photo by Sean Murphy.

By Matthew DeLuca and Becky Bratu, NBC News

A Massachusetts State Police officer released photos of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev that showed him bloodied and lit up by sniper rifle sights to show "the real Boston bomber," he said.

The move came amid uproar about a Rolling Stone magazine image that some said glamorized the accused killer.

Tactical photographer Sgt. Sean Murphy said the hundreds of images of the manhunt for Tsarnaev in April that he gave to Boston Magazine show someone not ?fluffed and buffed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.?

The photographs released to Boston Magazine by Murphy show some of the hundreds of heavily armed police officers who swarmed Watertown, Mass., in the search for Tsarnaev after his older brother Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with police. In some of the more than one dozen photographs published by the magazine, law enforcement officers dressed in camouflage gear and helmets surround the white boat in a backyard where Tsarnaev was ultimately found alive.

In other photographs, the bleeding accused bomber slumps out of the boat with a laser beam from a sniper rifle trained on his forehead.

Murphy said in a statement to Boston Magazine that he released the photographs after being outraged by a photo of Tsarnaev printed to accompany a Rolling Stone cover story earlier this week, calling the image ?an insult.?

?An image like this on the cover of Rolling Stone, we see it instantly as being wrong,? Murphy said in the statement published on Boston Magazine?s website. ?What Rolling Stone did was wrong. This guy is evil. This is the real Boston bomber. Not someone fluffed and buffed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.?

Three people were killed and more than 200 injured when two blasts from homemade bombs rocked the finish line of the Boston marathon on April 15. ?Tsarnaev appeared for an eight-minute hearing in federal court on July 11, where he pleaded not guilty to a 30-count indictment.

Family members of the survivors said the defendant appeared to smirk and appear indifferent to the court proceedings, speaking only to enter his plea with an accent reflecting his Chechen background.

The court appearance was attended by scores of bombing survivors and their families. More than a dozen officers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology police force stood outside the courthouse in apparent homage to Officer Sean Collier, who died in a shooting in the course of the manhunt.

The editor-in-chief of Boston Magazine wrote in a post later on the publication?s website on Thursday that Murphy had been relieved of duty, but not fired. His status of duty was to reviewed next week, editor John Wolfson wrote.

NBC News was not able to immediately verify the report, and calls for comment to the Massachusetts State Police were not returned. A spokesman for the state police said that the release of the photographs was not authorized and that an internal investigation into their distribution would be taken, according to the Associated Press.

The editors of Rolling Stone have defended the cover photo of Tsarnaev, which was headlined ?The Bomber? and included a tagline that called the man ?a monster.? Stores including CVS and Tadeschi Foods have announced that they will not sell the issue on their newsstands.

?Our hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, and our thoughts are always with them and their families,? Rolling Stones? editors said in a statement. ?The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens.?

But for many in Boston, Murphy said in his statement after releasing the photographs, the wounds from the 19-year-old Tsarnaev?s alleged actions are still raw.

?These were real people, with real lives, with real families,? Murphy said. ?I know from first-hand conversations that this Rolling Stone cover has kept many of them up ? again.? It?s irritated wounds that will never heal ? again. There is nothing glamorous in bringing more pain to a grieving family.?

Golf: Masterly Muirfield set to test Open challengers

GULLANE, United Kingdom: The Open returns to?Muirfield for the 16th time starting Thursday, with two straight weeks of sunshine having turned the famed Scottish links into a firm, fast and furious?test for the best.

Drivers will seldom be seen and irons will be the weapon of choice off many tees as an elite field looks to stay out of the punishing rough and create the best angles to attack the pins at the par-71 East Lothian layout.

Graeme McDowell, the 2010 US Open champion who grew up playing on links in Northern Ireland and who will start among the favourites, compared golfing at Muirfield to playing a game of chess.

"This is certainly a game of chess this week, where you have to position your pieces and keep them in play," he said.

"This golf course is all right there in front of you, there's no hidden tricks to it. Good quality golf gets rewarded.

"You hit the shots, they'll be where you expect them to be. It gives you half a chance around the greens. It's very penal off the tee, about half a chance around the greens, gives you a chance to pitch and hit bunker shots, and doesn't kind of unduly punish you too much.

"Nine out of 10 times, this golf course will reward good golf and punish you off the tee, but give yourself opportunities up and around the greens.

"I think it's a fair golf course which rewards great players and great golf, probably why we have so many great champions at this venue."

A quick check down the list of past winners at Muirfield certainly confirms what McDowell says as they include Ernie Els, the last time it was played there in 2002, Nick Faldo in 1992 and 1987, Tom Watson (1980), Lee Trevino (1972), Jack Nicklaus (1966) and Gary Player (1959).

Tournament favourite Tiger Woods is eager to join that list and finally win his 15th major title. His last major victory came at the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.

The 37-year-old American knows Muirfield well but not all of his memories are fond ones.

The last time the British Open was held there in 2002, he went out in his third round just as a storm system came out of the North Sea. The storm whipped havoc on the course and condemned the American to a 10-over 81, to date the worst score of his professional career.

That left him with no chance of making it three majors in a row, having already won the Masters and the US Open that year. Woods has failed to get that far along the road to the Grand Slam since then.

Still, he insists he harbours no hard feelings.

"Look at the list of past champions. The number of Hall of Famers that there are who have won here," said Woods, who added that the elbow injury that sidelined him after last month's US Open is no longer a problem.

"I think it just goes to show you you really have to hit the ball well. You have to be able to shape it both ways. You can't just hit one way. You have to shape it both ways and really control the shots."

For Justin Rose, he is bidding to become the first player since Woods in 2000 to win back-to-back US and British Opens while Ernie Els seeks to defend the Open title he won at Royal Lytham last year.

Phil Mickelson is sounding as confident as he ever has been at Open time following his win in the Scottish Open on Sunday. The likes of Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter will join Rose in the bid to become the first English winner of The Open since Faldo did so at Muirfield in 1992.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy will continue in his efforts to finally get to grips with his new golf clubs and balls, having switched providers during the winter.

Accoring to close friend McDowell, his fellow Ulsterman's winless year could soon be about to change.

The game of golf is very difficult. It's very fickle," McDowell told a press conference at Muirfield.

"Twelve months ago, Rory McIlroy's form wasn't very good either and he proceeded to have an incredible last six months of the season so I don't think anyone in this room would be shocked if he win this week and continue to have a phenomenal rest of the year. We always say form is temporary and class is permanent and he is a class player. I expect to see him back very soon."

Erdogan tells Turks to shun credit cards, rounds on banks

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan urged Turks not to use credit cards, accusing banks of locking people into poverty with excessive fees, and rounding on an "interest rate lobby" he says is seeking to weaken the economy.

The comments opened a new front in the verbal attacks Erdogan has periodically made against the financial community, which is betting the country's central bank will raise borrowing costs next week to steady the ailing lira currency.

Speaking late on Tuesday during an Iftar dinner, the evening meal with which Muslims break their daily fast during Ramadan, Erdogan said banks were growing rich on high commissions and urged people to live within their means.

"Don't get these credit cards," he said at the dinner with families of war veterans and fallen soldiers.

"Who is paying this money, it is not the rich but the poor. They die to get a credit card. They show off with it. Before the month's end the money finishes ... We have to thwart this game together."

Erdogan and members of his government have accused speculators and a "high-interest-rate lobby" of stoking volatility in financial markets to make a quick profit at the expense of the Turkish economy.

With the prime minister also keen to maintain strong economic growth ahead of elections next year, the central bank has been reluctant to hike rates following a credit-fuelled boom.

But the country's assets have been hit along with other emerging markets since the U.S. Federal Reserve suggested in May it would begin scaling back its stimulus program, while weeks of often violent anti-government demonstrations last month damaged Turkey's reputation for stability added to the pressure.

Governor Erdem Basci signaled on Monday the central bank may raise rates next week to stem a slide in the Turkish currency, which has sunk to record lows against the dollar in recent weeks.

That would make the lira and lira-denominated assets such as Turkish government bonds more attractive to foreign investors, as well as pushing up commercial banks' lending rates.

Erdogan, who repeatedly said last year he wanted real interest rates of zero percent, vowed last month to "choke" speculators growing rich off "the sweat of the people", urging Turks to put their money in state not private banks.

"I didn't say "interest rate lobby" recently for nothing. I say these things because I know something," Erdogan said.

In a rare written statement ahead of Tuesday's central bank monetary policy committee meeting, governor Basci said global policy uncertainty and volatility would not be allowed to damage financial and price stability in Turkey.

The lira eased slightly to 1.9285 against the dollar by 1028 GMT from 1.9211 late on Monday but remains well off its weakest-ever level of 1.9737 seen on July 8.
